Idea/Initiative Name: Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Email Alert Service

Objective: Provide fast, easy access to vehicle industry information on the DMV Internet website.

Description: The DMV and the Department of Technology Services developed a new Email Alert Service to provide fast, easy access to vehicle industry information on the DMV Internet website. The Email Alert Service is free and available to all DMV offices, vehicle industry partners, banks, financial institutions, law enforcement, and other interested parties. Subscribers are immediately notified when new memos, manuals, regulations, and other publications are placed on the DMV Internet at www.emailalert.dmv.ca.gov/subscriptions.asp.

Results: The new Email Alert Service supports the Governor’s “Go Green” mandate by discontinuing wasteful paper distribution of handbooks and other publications resulting in a cost savings of approximately $200,000 annually in postage. The DMV ceased providing paper copies to the vehicle industry on March 31, 2006. In 2007, the department expanded the Email Alert Service for internal DMV customers and the vehicle industry to include updates on new regulations and public and private driving schools. Over 12,000 customers subscribe to the DMV Email Alert Service.
