Idea/Initiative Name: Workforce Planning Resources – How to Recruit & Retain Gen Y’s
Description: Did you know that 55% of California’s workforce are Baby Boomers, and that only 4% are Generation Y’s? In the next five years, 35% of the state’s workforce will be eligible to retire, and many departments are not prepared to fill those vacant positions.
Many companies in the private sector are realizing that to recruit and retain the next generation of employees, they must cater to what that generation wants. Generation Y employees want things like technology –providing Wi-fi technology so they can take their laptops to another employee’s desk and work collaboratively. These employees want flexible hours – some Generation Y’s produce their best work at 11:00 o’clock at night, not 8:00 o’clock in the morning.
One company that is realizing they have to change their ways in order to attract the next generation of workers is Zappos.com, the online shoe retailer. Click the link below to see what Zappos is doing to recruit and retain the best and the brightest.
