Description: Most of us are aware of the impending wave of mass retirements that is about to affect state employment. We know that approximately 80,000 employees will be eligible to retire in the next five years – that’s roughly 35% of our entire workforce! We also know that our current state hiring system is cumbersome and outdated.

But what about those who don’t know? How do you spread this message to encourage others to begin workforce planning? A great way to spread the message is to use a tool such as the attached power point presentations, which were presented by DPA to the Association of California State Supervisors and at the Workforce Planning Conference hosted by Senators Perata and Ashburn. This helpful resource includes data on the average age of California state employees, talks about the HR Modernization Project and its efforts to update the state’s hiring processes, and helps you decide if your department is where they need to be to recruit the next generation of state employees.
